Playing in ensemble is a life-long skill. Ensemble playing develops synchronization and socialization. It brings joy to all involved. What is the role of an ensemble in elementary piano education? What are the resources? How can ensemble music boost a teacher’s creativity? CSU, Chico Piano Professor Dr. Natalya Shkoda, together with her student and daughter April Smirnoff, will discuss benefits and challenges of introducing ensemble music during the first two years of individual piano studies in the online Zoom presentation Re-thinking the Role of Ensemble Music in Elementary Private Piano Studies.

Lecture – Recital: Petrarca + Liszt = Poetry in Music

Presenter: Elias-Axel Pettersson
14th-century Italian poet and scholar Francesco Petrarca wrote more than 300 sonnets (Shakespeare wrote 154), all dedicated to Laura, whose true identity has never been confirmed, only surmised. Upon his travels to Italy, Franz Liszt became inspired by Petrarca’s poetry and composed three pieces based on Sonnets Nos. 47, 104, and 123. Dr. Pettersson will take his listeners through the mind of each great artist and show how poetry was turned into music that moves the soul.
